Money isn't the root of all evil but the lack of it can make men do desperate things. Just recently a Nigerian couple identified as Richard and Chidinma Benson were arrested by operatives of the Inspector-General of Police Monitoring Unit in the Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State for allegedly selling their day-old baby.

According to reports, Chidinma delivered a baby boy on October 7. Herself and her husband then sold the child to a certain Rose Onyia for N250, 000. Speaking to Punch, the couple who revealed that they are parents of four children, claimed that they sold the child because they want to escape poverty.

Further investigations reveal that the baby was later resold another child trafficker, identified as Eucharia Jaja, for N550,000 after which the infant was sold to an unnamed person in Lagos.

When asked, the husband revealed that abject poverty made them decide to sell their child. He said: "My wife had a big sore in one of her legs and we needed money to treat the wound. At a point, my wife could not walk; that was when we decided to sell the baby boy after he was delivered."
Meanwhile, the police in Imo state have arrested two women identified as Chizoba Eze and Amaka Eze for allegedly buying newborn twins, Emmanuel and Emmanuela, in Umahia, the Abia state capital for N1.8 million.
